Campervan, the open road in the Mountains baby!!

The next day we had an early start as we had to cover 300km and get the rental car back to Melbourne by 11am!! It was great watching the sun come up as we headed out of the Grampians. This time no passsengers just some Kangaroos at the roadside for company!!

We had a night in Melbs with Ben and Fleur and a tasty BBQ for diner to set us up for our next adventure starting the next day.

We booked our little campervan through a relocation company. The deal being we would relocate the thing from Melbourne to Sydney in a set number of days at a dollar a day........result!! We booked an extra day at cost and added some fancy 'no worries' insurance so still cost a bit but was all in a good deal.

We rocked up to the rental company to pick up our new wheels at 12, as instructed by standbyrelocations.com, only to find the details agreed at booking were a little different (don't use standbyrelocations.com lots of unecessary hassle and unhelpful)!! It only took 2 hours to sort this little glitch out and so a little behind scedule we took our new mini home on wheels out the door and on our way Thredbo bound!!

Some great driving over the next 8 hours stopping for the occassional photo and taking in all the changing lanscape as we got closer to the mountains!! Unfortunately our late start mean driving did get a litte unnerving towards the end of the journey. But then en who wouldnt be a little unnerved when ascending well over a thousand metres, in pitch black darkness, heavy rain, thunder and lightening, and large sections of the whinding road with no barriers between us and drops of hundreds of metres over the edge of the mountain, we haven't seen another car for 2 hours and no road signs to tell us we're even heading in the right direction....... and the petrol tanks running down!!

When we saw he lights of Thredbo the relief was audible. But as we rounded the last corner we had to make a big swerve to avoid a huge wombat lumbering along in the road. Luckily with no other cars on the road we didnt have the worry of a head on and lucky as swerving left would have put us over the mountain and down well over a thousand metres!!

We both immediately relaxed driving into Thredbo, although dark we could see it was a top notch ski resort and felt like we had found some civilisation after the last few hick towns we had seen enroute.

We pulled up to the YHA which was shut but got some frendly advice on where to park the campervan for an overnight sleep.

We parked up, made the bed, shared a beer and put our exhausted heads down to sleep when RATTLE and THUD came from the rear of the vehicle.......oh shit!! Whatever it was it sounded BIG!! We both lept up and into the drivers seat without much of a word and drove the van top speed to the nearest hotel car park!! We surveyed the car rear of the car - no damage. Had a very tentative look in the fridge armed with our deadly cooking utensils but nothing to be found. Loo did notice we had left the firdge on so switched it off and we headed to car park 2 for a hopefully uneventful nighyts sleep. The penny dropped once the adrenaline had settled and we put the fridge back on only to find the noise and THUD returned. So our deadly animal was just a fridge warning system........very unfunny of the designers to make it immitate a crocodile or large snake we laughed relieved as we put our heads down for a first nights sleep in the wilderness!!
